eli5: Why do birds love to sit on overhead power lines?

I was just wondering about it walking down the street. I thought maybe it’s because of a solid view of an area which provides awareness of possible predators. But on the other hand a bird is in an open field so it’s easy for a predator to strike. So my thought was contradicting.

Any explanation?

The main predators birds are worried about are snakes, cats and other terrestrial animals. Power lines are out in the open, away from trees and other cover that predators might hide in. This makes them naturally appealing to birds.

My dad used to have Purple Marin houses, and he noticed that the birds would not nest in the houses if it was not adequately far away from the shrubs. So we had to trim the shrubs in order to attract nesting pairs. Birds do not like to nest or even hang out near trees or shrubs, as that could possibly conceal some creature that might want to eat them. Due to safety regulations, power lines are required to maintain a certain distance from such cover. So this is an appealing perching location for many birds,.
