Eli5: Why do carrot cores have ridges that look like thorns?

Question

I clearly have a lot of time on my hands and was slowly picking apart a carrot. The core has these thorns that go into indents in the outer part of the carrot.

I’ve tried to google this and have found nothing except the explanations of what a carrot core is made of.

As far as I know it’s because that’s where the roots bring in water and nutrients to the rest of the plant. Those “thorns” are simply where the roots branched off of.
