eli5 Why do humans sometimes only recognize a pattern in their peripheral?

Because your brain tries to make sense of your surroundings all the time, and it will fill in the gaps to make sense of it. But if it’s in your peripheral then your attention to detail in that area is very low so the chances that your brain tries to for example turn a jacket that hangs over a stool into a headless man will be higher.
