Eli5: Why do modern bicycles force you in a tilted forward position?

I find myself constantly wanting to stand up straight, but I can’t use a bicycle without my hands.

Weren’t they like that in the past?

There are many different types of bicycles with different geometries. The road bicycle forces the tilted forward position to reduce drag and allow you to reach faster speeds. There are more upright bikes, like commuter bikes that allow a more vertical posture. There are Dutch bikes and some single gear bikes that allow a normal vertical sitting position. A good bicycle shop will stock many different types of bicycles and so bicycle fittings to make sure the bicycle suits the new owner.
