eli5: Why do mountains look smaller when you move closer from far

When I look at Mount Rainier from right at the window, it looks smaller than it does when I scoot back all the way to the other side of the window. I was in the car and the Cascades looked huge but then as the car moved east (towards it) it started looking smaller but why?

As you move back in the car, your effective field of view gets smaller as the car itself frames the mountain. Your mind is used to the car, and it isn’t what you are focused on, so it filters it out to a certain degree, and the mountain takes up more of your effective field of view, appearing larger.

Regarding the window, it acts like a picture frame. As you get closer to the window, the frame gets larger, making the mountain seem smaller,
