eli5: Why do mountains look smaller when you move closer from far

When I look at Mount Rainier from right at the window, it looks smaller than it does when I scoot back all the way to the other side of the window. I was in the car and the Cascades looked huge but then as the car moved east (towards it) it started looking smaller but why?

Regarding the window, it acts like a picture frame. As you get closer to the window, the frame gets larger, making the mountain seem smaller,
