Eli5: why do things become blurry the further you are from them?

That only happens if you’re nearsighted, which I am to a small extent (-0.75 on my vision test). I discovered that when I borrowed a coworker’s glasses as a joke once, and discovered that I could read a car’s license plate clearly from 20 meters away, which I couldn’t before.
