Eli5, why do things hurt less when you pinch the surrounding skin.

When I have like long hairs and I pluck them, if I pinch the skin around it, it doesn’t hurt as bad for example.

I had an amazing high school psychology teacher who taught this phenomenon by kicking his shin into a desk and then lightly rubbing his shin with his hand to make the pain go away. I remember the whole class cracking up as he did it multiple times. He explained in detail why this happens, though it’s been so long I completely forgot the psychological reason. Someone please remind me, don’t let Mr. McLaughlin’s pain be in vain.
