ELI5-Why do we laugh while preparing to scare someone? That moment before your friend comes around a corner unknowing of your jumpscare.

I think it’s the excited anticipation of the rush we get from scaring / being scared. We know what it’s like to be startled and the thought of causing it is amusing. The closer we get the more anticipation the more it causes that excitement.

That’s my best guess.
