Eli5: Why do we laugh?

To keep from crying. To momentarily stop the existential dread from creeping in. To forget about the unending march of time guiding us all towards our inevitable death. Also it makes us feel good.
Humans are social animals. We evolved in small groups of people that depended on each other and supported each other. Not an internet board full of trolls.
So humans evolved to display their feelings clearly to other people. Joy, anger, shame, etc. That way the other people could react appropriately to how the person felt.
