Eli5 Why do we rarely laugh at comedy tv/film when on our own, but laugh often when we have company?

We don’t 100% know why we laugh, but we think it’s social and helps us cope with stress and manage difficult moments. Laughter is communication and part of how we maintain relationships with other humans. The observation that we don’t laugh nearly so much when we’re alone is actually evidence that it happens for a communicative, social reason!
