ELI5, why do we see different colours and patterns when we close our eyes, or even put pressure on closed eyes?

Optometrist here. I think what you’re describing is a phenomenon we call a phosphene. Simply put, mechanical pressure on the eye stimulates the retina in a similar way to visual stimuli.
