eli5 Why do we use WARM salt water for canker sores?

1.12K viewsBiologyOther

I understand why salt is needed, to dry out the sore and heal it. My doctor said: “gargle with salt water that is as warm as you can handle without burning yourself?” Why was the “warm” aspect of this emphasized so much?

Heat makes things to expand and stretch out. Including skin cells (or rather: pores). If they’re open wide, it’s easier to get water (and anything else) out. It also energizes blood flow and soothes, which help to heal as well. That’s pretty much how saunas work.

So as many have said you can dissolve more salt in warm water then in cold.
Tip i smear zendium tootpaste directly on the sore, painful when you do it but for me they stop being painfull after 1 or 2 applications and go away entirely very quickly aswell.

The other comment here is a good answer, but you shouldn’t be afraid or intimidated to ask your doctor questions like this 🙂

best treatment for canker sores. mix half benadryl and half mylanta into a mouth wash. keep it over the area. it will numb it and help it heal.

if you have access to a doctor you can also get viscous lidocaine and add that as well for even better effects.

Pro-tip: use alum instead of salt (or instead of baking soda if that’s your usual go-to). It’s usually in the [spice or baking isle at most grocery chains in a small container](https://imgur.com/a/aYaFRuo).

I get canker sores because I bite my lip somewhat regularly and it always feels like salt and/or baking soda just prolongs the healing, to the point that it’s 1.5-2 weeks of pain. Hydrogen Peroxide doesn’t seem to expedite the healing either. Alum heals it in 2-3 days, sometimes even overnight if I get it on the sore quickly enough.

I just wet my finger so that the powder sticks to it, dab it on the sore, and let it sit until it no longer stings. Then rinse. I usually do it before going to bed and it drastically improves overnight. Wouldn’t recommend making a wash with it since it tastes kinda bad though.

I’m sorry you guys have been suffering with this homemade bs canker sore advice. From a doctor too? I’m amazed. Call your dentist/doctor and get Triamcinolone Acetoneide Dental Paste 0.1%. One-shots any canker sore overnight. I never don’t have a tube in the cabinet

What did your doctor say when you asked them?

No reason. It does nothing to help with a canker sore anyways. Don’t know why a doctor would even bother recommending it. Maybe to make you feel better.

Causes of cankers, aside from abrasion? My mom always claimed they can be caused by excess sugar. I seem to get them around Halloween and Christmas, when I eat a lot of candy. Is this connection all in my head, or is there something to the theory?
