ELi5: Why do websites require my phone number at the checkout page?

I’m buying some birthday gifts, and all the websites I’m ordering from require a phone number in addition to shipping and billing location.

I am personally loathsome of SPAM callers, and having my information leaked. Can I give a fake number like **(210) 867-5309** to stave off any risk of my information being leaked? Or is it a secondary confirmation that I’m me when using my debit/credit card?

To clarify: I normally order off Amazon, but some specialty purchases I’ve decided to go directly to the manufacturer’s website to purchase.

Usually it is for the purpose of shipping that the phone number is required.
Your card information is based on you having the correct address and number on the back.

If you’re in the US, sign up for a Google number and use that. Companies can leave messages but not actually reach you.

Companies will rarely use given phone numbers to spam call you, but they might call if there’s an issue with your order, provide it to the shipping company in case there’s an issue with the shipping/delivery, perhaps use it as part of verification for purchase.
