ELI5. Why do you feel itchy/stung when you are reading or hearing about someone else getting bitten/stung? It makes no sense to me!

It’s a system which has evolved to help humans survive. If you see someone getting hurt, a special part of your brain simulates the same for you. It’s the foundation of empathy.

It helped the species to make people aware of what they do to others.

Empathy and pain are very very closely related.

When you see someone getting hurt you will “feel the pain” for them because of empathy.
