Buoyancy. Water is denser than air, so it supports you much better than air does. When there’s enough salt in the water to increase its density further, you can float without even having to try.

Buoyancy is a force that makes water literally “push” things up. As you enter water and your body pushes “down” on the water to make you sink (gravity), buoyancy from the water will push you up. Changing your position (e.g. lying flat vs standing vertically in water or propelling your feet) will help buoyancy push you up instead of gravity pulling you down.
