eli5 Why do you only sometimes burp when you are drinking carbonated drinks?

I just happen to notice that I can take two swallows of the same size with different results.
If it’s producing gas like it normally would, whats happening to the gas?

The carbon dioxide is still being released, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be released as a burp. Your stomach can force it down into your intestines to be released as flatulence, or it can slowly leak out of your stomach in an unnoticed waft
