eli5: why does eating sugar make you feel so full yet so hungry at the same time?

Every time I have a sweet before I’ve eaten a real meal my stomach feels so full of food but the rest of my body tells me i’m hungry. Is there something about sugar filled foods specifically that doesn’t leave room in your stomach for other foods?

I’m not sure but sugar triggers a release of insulin which, I think, can trigger a full feeling. However sugar has no nutritional value so your body keeps asking for nutrients. That’s how it was explained to me.
