[ELI5] Why does putting bread in with a bag of cookies keep the cookies soft?

My family always did this growing up and I never understood the logic behind it and the science seems too complicated to think about.

It’s because of moisture content. Moisture content will always be shared by everything in a space.

Bread has very high moisture content and cookies are very low so the bread is basically sharing it’s moisture with the cookies and keeping them soft.
