Eli5, Why does store bought popcorn look different than the stuff you pop at home?

Stuff that’s pre popped and bought in a bag always looks “round” whereas the popcorn you pop at home always looks chaotically random, microwave or stovetop…. Doesn’t matter

Round popcorn is just made from a different variety of popcorn, called mushroom popcorn. The “normal” kind is called butterfly popcorn, or sometimes snowflake popcorn.
Mushroom popcorn kernels are a little sturdier and easier to coat, so it’s well-suited for prepackaged popcorn.
