eli5 – why does tapping the top of a pop can make it fizz less? Or is that just a myth I’ve been practicing for 30+ years?

I’ve been pulling and flicking the tab on the top since I was a teen when my uncle showed me how to keep a soda can you dropped from exploding and it’s always worked so I’m glad I finally got to see it’s both not a myth and why it works
