eli5 – why does tapping the top of a pop can make it fizz less? Or is that just a myth I’ve been practicing for 30+ years?

The best way to open a can without it exploding on you is to open the tab really fast. If you pussy foot it, it will spray all over you. If you open it fast the hole is big enough for gases to escape without a mess.
