Eli5: Why does the density of water change at different temperatures

Not just water, all matter expands with heat. If you add energy to matter the atoms that its made of move more. As they move they bounce off each other, and this causes the overall size to grow (lowering the density), but the actual amount of atoms remains the same.

When water gets hot it expands a little bit, this way the volume is bigger but the mass is the same. This way density changes

Everyone saying “all matter expands when heated” are wrong. No only does water shrink when heated from 0°C to 4°C, there are other materials that SHRINK when heated (In some temperature zones).

“all matter expands when heated” is not universally true.

It isn’t an answer to your question, why the water changes density/volume when temperature changes, but I wanted to point this error out
