ELi5- why does the journey there always feel longer than the journey back?

Because of the anticipation you have of going there. You notice a lot more things along the way, making it feel like you’ve been travelling for longer.
On the way back, you are less fussed. You’ve already seen the route and you know exactly what to expect when you get home. So you don’t pay as much attention to your surroundings and this makes you think that time has gone quicker.
