Eli5: Why does water that dries on glass leave “streaks” or grey markings on the glass?

Water is rarely pure, so when it evaporates there will be leftovers in the glass. For drinking water it’s often times minerals, for your windows it’s polluted air that goes into the rain clouds. Also explains why our elderly people complain about having to clean the windows more than they used to.
