Exercise releases the feel-good happy chemicals for most people.
Even simpler, it’s a sense of accomplishment. I’ve heard recently “you have a million problems until you have a health problem… then you have one problem” basically it’s relieving to know that you have a body that can still kick ass at moving. Even I, who mostly hate the gym, have sometimes come out of a workout thinking “God, I am grateful for a body that moves so well”.

Being active in a state of nature likely meant we should be in pursuit of food or fleeing from something that considers us to be its food.

Surviving would imply we won at whatever we were doing. Although when failing to lift a weight, it does not feel good. Maybe because monke brain knows we lost at something

I don’t feel good at all during or after working out… it’s just a slog. I’d be curious as to if anyone can explain that? Would be nice to feel something positive from it but I just do it to stay healthier.
