If the goal is to conserve energy, why do humans feel good when working out?

Being active in a state of nature likely meant we should be in pursuit of food or fleeing from something that considers us to be its food.

Surviving would imply we won at whatever we were doing. Although when failing to lift a weight, it does not feel good. Maybe because monke brain knows we lost at something
