eli5: Why does your face contort when you cry?

270 viewsBiologyOther

This is something I’ve noticed with myself and others. So a lot of the time, I cry with a straight face. Tears might be streaming and all that, but I look “normal.” But if I am absolutely crushed or heartbroken about something, my face will scrunch up, often when I’m SOBBING 😭. I’ve noticed other people do this too when they are very upset. It’s kind of embarrassing after the fact, but when it’s actually happening, you’re usually too upset to care. Why does this happen? Why can I look normal when I’m crying normally but when I’m absolutely sobbing, I “ugly cry”? Also, is there a way to prevent your face from contorting when extremely upset and sobbing?

It’s a way to non verbally communicate your emotion. Crying isn’t a super specific response; people can cry for a variety of reasons, not all of them bad. So when you are truly distressed, your face contorts to non verbally communicate that you are distraught.
