eli5 – Why does your saliva produce so much while brushing your teeth?

You mouth is designed to release saliva when you eat so that the saliva starts the digestive process
You mouth thinks that the toothpaste is food so it starts releasing saliva because it thinks you’re eating
You’d find your producing even more saliva when you’re actually eating food but you’re much less likely to notice this because you end up swallowing it when you swallow your food
If you’re producing a huge amount though it’s worth mentioning this next time you go to the dentist and/or doctor because it might be something else like a mild allergic reaction to something in the toothpaste
