Eli5: Why does your voice change when you have a cold?

I don’t mean when your nose is blocked, just specifically your voice box.. What exactly it’s happening to cause your voice to sound “strangled” or croaky when you get a cold or have a cough?

When you have a cold or a cough, the tissues in your throat become inflamed and swollen, which can cause your voice to sound hoarse or croaky. This is because the swollen tissues make it harder for your vocal cords to vibrate properly, which changes the sound of your voice. It can also cause you to feel like your throat is tight or constricted, which can make it difficult to speak.
