Eli5: why is there no test for the “chemical imbalance” that is often mentioned for depression?

If there was a word to address that question. I would have to say that no one knows what to ask as the definitive answer to what it was you wanted to know. Not liking yourself ala depression is when you actually catch up with yourself. Realising short comings hurts, as they should.
