[ELI5] Why only one side of the nose get blocked at a time

You don’t notice this normally, but only one of your nostrils is doing much breathing at any given time. The other is mostly closed off (you still breathe through it, just not very much) and they switch several times during the day. When you get sick though that part of your nose becomes inflamed and swollen. That causes the closed off side to fully close, and that’s when you notice it.

its the same reason you’ll get short bursts of both nostrils being clear before getting blocked again: thats the transition between one closing and the other opening.
