Eli5 why people in old pictures look like they have a different facial structure?

Is it because how we take pictures has changed or have our faces changed?

We are anatomically (almost) the same as 10.000 years ago.

So much more likely different lighting, or style promoting different features

Stress while growing up and uv from sunlight really makes a difference. In poor countries you can really tell someone just from looking at their face, there is no hiding it, if they do manual labor vs the upper class who don’t.

In America a century ago it was very common to live off the land and do manual labor. Now it’s not as backbreaking and farmers use machines instead.

Cameras did not pick up on super fine detail, so things got smoothed over. That’s why you rarely see acne or fine lines in older pictures. If you’re losing that much detail, face structures probably appear differently.
