Eli5: Why reverse in cars sound so strange?

It’s just transmission directing the same power/movement, but through different placed gears (?) So why does it sound so strange

Straight cut gears vs helical gears.

Straight cut are cheap but noisy so we throw them in reverse, they are also really strong which is why a lot of race care make horrific noises.

Helical cut gears have a smoother silent power delivery.
