eli5:How do animals know that they need food and water to survive when born?

When baby animals are born, how do they know that that weird hungry feeling means to go eat and how do they know what to eat?

Instinct. Animals.. just know these things from when they were born due to their DNA IIRC.

Breathing is also something we just.. do when we’re born, like you also did. But it’s a reflex.
