Alkalinity and pH are the exact same thing. An alkaline solution is a solution with a high pH an acidic solution is one with a low pH. When we measure the pH of a liquid, what we are actually measuring is the concentration of hydrogen ions, called H+ ions. There are several different definitions of what an acid and a base is, but the most simplistic explanation is that an acid is a substance that generates H+ ions in water, and a base is a substance that produces OH- ions in water.

So how are they two sides of the same coin? Because an H+ ion and an OH- ion come together to form water! That’s why acids and bases neutralize each other. So if we increase the OH- concentration (alkaline) we will reduce to H+ concentration and thus increase the pH!
