UPI is a large news agency that provides news, photos, video, and audio services to various news providers. Those companies pay a subscription for using the service, and then credit UPI when they run the material on their shows, newspapers, or web sites. That’s why you often see the same photo in news stories by different reporters, with “Photo courtesy of UPI” or something similar under it.
And I just now realized that you might have meant something different. If you don’t mean United Press International, you’ll have to specify what you do mean.
