Energy drinks just have caffeine in them, which is a nervous system stimulant, making you feel more alert. You’re not really “drinking energy” any more than when you drink a sugary soda.
As for long term effects. You might develop a caffeine dependence, which isn’t the best, but is manageable. As well, all the sugar in them gives you a higher risk of obesity and type-2 diabetes, so it’s inadvisable to have too many energy drinks.
