In the U.K. the elected politicians are frightened of the boomer newspapers. It will change soon as the readers and their newspapers expire I suppose

Essentially because of the stigma against it that Boomers still uphold as well as inconsistencies surrounding how to tax it. That, plus here in the US it would take money away from police forces due to the decreased efforts regarding the war on drugs.

A long time ago a new technology in the form of hemp threatened other better established businesses. They then lobbied in America to criminalise the drug marujuana and the plant in order to protect against competition from the hemp industry.

Later Richard Nixon wanted to demonise the drug further in order to lock up and disrupt hippies meetings since they weren’t going to vote for them. This propaganda succeeded and the movement, labelled “the war on drugs”, spread across the world. It failed to curb drug use and sales but suceeded in creating prejudices like it intended to do.

The older generations still hold the prejudices.
