Film vs digital cameras

I kind of have an understanding about film camera, but for some reason I cannot wrap my head around how digital cameras work. From a mechanical and engineering standpoint, what is the actual difference between how the two operate?

Film is a physical piece of “paper” that has some light-sensitive chemicals on it. When exposed to light momentarily, the chemicals react to the brightness of the light forming the picture.

Digital cameras have a digital light sensor made up of thousands of pixels. Pixels are like little tiny light sensitive sensors, just like your TV or phone screen except that instead of emitting light they absorb the light. The camera then measures the brightness and color of the light hitting each pixel to recreate the image.
