I was told by a Miele guy that the eco programs save energy by reducing mechanical movement, not heat.
The laundry just sits longer in the water/detergent bedween cycles to get the same cleaning results as a regular program.
From this info I assume that the ultra short programs, that take less than 30 minutes, reach the same cleaning results by a limited laundry load plus much more mechanical movement even during soaking cycles.
You can save energy by setting a lower heat, this was your only influence about the energy consumption.
Now there are a variety of programs that are tweaked for different jobs thus they save money not only through energy consumption, water, longevity of your washing mashine but also saving you detergent and cleaning your pricey clothes more gentle.
