That’s how most of the internet works. There are hundreds of undersea cables going around the planet: https://www.submarinecablemap.com/

Google likely just wanted their own cable instead of paying to use someone else’s.

It’s not a continueous cable. There arerepeating amplifiers every 10km or so. It’s all spliced up into a giant spool on the ship, as shown in the other thread.
