Why do astronauts’ bones become weaker in space?

Bones get weaker over time as the cells die and the minerals dissolve into the blood stream. When you use your bones by applying forces through them you stimulate bone growth making them stronger again. However astronauts do not use much of their skeleton as they do not walk and do not lift heavy things.
