Homologous chromosomes refers to a pair of chromosomes. So, #1 from sperm and #1 from egg are together a set of homologous chromosomes. We have 22 sets of homologous chromosomes, making 44 total plus your two sex chromosomes for a total of 46 in humans.

Will #1 sperm sometimes refuse to ask for directions and end up with #3? Or are they always the same pairs? (Sorry if this is a dumb Q, it just caught my attention)

Imagine them as 2 identical documents filled up with different information, they both contain the same categories of information, but not necessarily the same info.
