How a pulse oximeter works?

It shines a light through your finger and measures how much comes out on the other side. Depending on the oxygenation level of your blood, it will absorb more or less of this light. The change in absorption between pulses help it figure out what part if the absorption is your blood oxygen and what part is your finger.
