How a tree dies of old age ?

Unlike humans, trees keep growing for their whole life. This isn’t necessarily a good thing. A tree can get so heavy that it breaks under its own weight. The bigger it gets, the more nutrients it needs, but the nutrients available may only be enough to sustain a smaller tree. The longer a tree lives, the more likely it is that it will catch some disease or suffer some natural disaster that injures or kills it (for the same reason that someone who buys more lottery tickets is more likely to win the lottery).
