It’s possible sequence the DNA from a sample and end up with partial sequences from multiple people. That would be enough to match them to samples taken from suspects. The same can also be done with PCR/gel electrophoresis and other less expensive methods (how it would have been done a few years ago when sequencing was too expensive)
For example, you have sequences from 3 people at a crime scene with two bodies. If one of the 3 matches a living suspect that doesn’t look very good for them.
