How are documentaries able to show criminal activity without being prosecuted?

I’m watching a doc on Vice showing a guy who scams for a living. They even show firearms. How is this possible? Even shows like gangland, how are they able to film this & why are people so open to talk about it?

1) it’s not illegal to see criminal activity and not report it. Nor is it to show criminal activity via media

2) they usually never pay the people they film. They pay a fixer to get them in touch with someone. They never pay the offender thus they haven’t monetarily aided in a crime.

3) they’re open to talk about it because gangs, drugs, prostitution, guns, it’s all a business and a documentary is free advertising. Plus these are kids 16 to 24 usually. They aren’t always the smartest and want their time on TV.
