The brain contains many neurons each of these are connected to many others these connections can change, as they change memories change or are created the more permanent the connections become, normally from usage the more fixed the memory is. https://youtu.be/2JUxf3a_dHE

So think of your brain like a big library! When you learn something new or have a special moment, it’s like checking out a book from the library. Your brain puts that memory in a special section just for you. When you want to remember it later, your brain goes back to that special section and brings it out for you to see again, just like finding a book in the library!
That is how I would explain it to a 5 year old
