people trying to have sex with minors generally aren’t suffering from a disorder, they’re just people preying on vulnerable people. Someone who would do that probably needs some therapy or other serious mental help, but you don’t really “cure” pedophilia, like you don’t “cure” a rapist or “cure” a murderer.

The reason people think theres s cure for criminal behaviour its because recently there have been discourses around pedos trying to make them the victims of some sort of “evil sociery” or “uncontrollable urges”.

Pedophilia is a crime, the crime consist on a power dynamic against vulnerable people. The difference is that their victims are childs instead of other adults (like rapists).

There hasnt been alot of research neither praxis. Because somehow the early discourse i mention doesnt encourage some possible methods. It would ve labeled as immoral or unethical.

One thing can be medication to low libid and/or sexual satisfaction. Some people on antidepresant become unable to orgasm or enjoy or seek sex. That can be a solution on some cases.

They have some cutting-edge programs in other countries, but have basically found that no, you can’t cure it, but you can, in some cases, get them to not act on it.

Similar if you compare it to someone that is a recovering alcoholic, they are never NOT an alcoholic, they can only not drink. So it is possible, in some cases, through therapy and treatment, to have someone with pedophilic urges not act on those feelings, but it has to be forever managed.

(I am NOT comparing being an alcoholic to being a pedophile – merely that they are both not “curable”)

One of the primary issues that we have here is if an adult reports to a psychiatrist “I have sexual thoughts about children” at least here in the US, the clinician is legally obligated to report them even if they haven’t done anything (child pornography is abhorrent so it’s implied that the person inquiring may possess it). It turns into an uncomfortable legal paradox where people that have not committed any offences legally can’t speak to professionals in order to develop coping strategies NOT to offend. Therefore the person is more likely TO offend. I don’t think that there’s a cure for this so much as if someone with these urges submerges themselves in the corporate world, lives in a neighborhood without children, and doesn’t own a personal computer.
